Chan + Hori Contemporary
UNTAPPED is an annual series presented by the not-for-profit Visual Arts Development Association (VADA) and supported by Chan + Hori Contemporary, that invites artists to submit artwork proposals for participation in a group exhibition within the Chan + Hori gallery space. The goal of UNTAPPED is to establish support networks and offer a platform for local artists at the crucial early stages of their careers. Artists with up to four years of experience and practice were invited to apply and a jury selected 10 artists for the exhibition.
The feature that sets UNTAPPED apart from other emerging artist programmes is its close collaboration with arts patrons. Local patrons provide upfront funding for the project. In return, each patron is able to collect one artwork from the exhibition – which means that over one-third of the artworks shown by these young artists will automatically be acquired by established art patrons. This initiative moves beyond general exposure and connects artists directly with individuals who actively support the visual arts in Singapore.
For the 2017 UNTAPPED series, a component called “UNTAPPED Connections” allowed two artists to be selected by arts patrons for a cash gift totaling $5,000. This amount went to artists Kayleigh Goh and Xinwei Che.
VADA is delighted to announce the ten artists selected for 2018 UNTAPPED:
For 2018, the UNTAPPED Advisory Committee comprised:
– Michelle Ho, Curator, ADM Gallery & Assistant Director, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
– Martin Constable, Assistant Professor, The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Vietnam
– Adeline Kueh, Senior Lecturer, LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore
The exhibition will be curated by Deborah Lim, Assistant Curator, Chan + Hori Contemporary.
